Shane Liddelow

Shane Liddelow PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Neuroscience Institute of NYU Grossman School of Medicine (NYUGSoM), holding joint appointments in the Departments of Neuroscience & Physiology and Ophthalmology. He is also co-Director of the Parekh Center for Interdisciplinary Neurology at NYUGSoM. His research focuses on reactive astrocytes and their interactions with other cells in the central nervous system, exploring both their beneficial and detrimental roles. Notably, Shane’s work has identified a specific type of reactive astrocyte that releases a toxic lipid, leading to neuron death in several neurodegenerative diseases. His lab is at the forefront of discovering new sub-states of reactive astrocytes, developing innovative models and tools to study their functions and implications in disease and infection.

Shane has authored over 90 scientific papers and has been recognised with numerous prestigious awards, including the NHMRC (Australia) CJ Martin Training Award (2012-2016), the Glenn Foundation Award for Aging (2016), the Inge Grundke-Iqbal Award from the Alzheimer’s Association (2019), the David Hague Early Career Investigator of the Year Award from Alzheimer’s Research UK (2020), and the Pershing Square MIND Prize (2024).
