Dietmar Thal
Dietmar R. Thal, MD, PhD is Professor for Neuropathology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. Dr. Thal’s research focuses on the neuropathology of Alzheimer’s disease. He described phases of Aβ-plaque deposition in the human brain that are integrated into the recommended criteria for the neuropathological diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease by the NIA-AA as well as types of cerebral amyloid angiopathy that are basis of many studies worldwide. His projects were funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, Germany), the German Alzheimer Forschung Initiative (AFI, Germany), FWO (Vlanderen-Belgium), KU-Leuven Onderzoeksraad (Vlanderen-Belgium), and Stichting Alzheimer Onderzoek (Belgium). Currently he recieves research grants from FWO (Vlanderen-Belgium), KU-Leuven Onderzoeksraad (Vlanderen-Belgium), Stichting Alzheimer Onderzoek (Belgium), and Alzheimer Association (USA) to study the impact of co-pathologies and regulated cell death mechanisms on Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
